Direction signs at the Taverna turn off. Spring poppies in Taverna.

View from the Taverna area to Cantalupo, and to the mountains south of Cantalupo. Side note: Cantalupo is between 510 meters and 990 meters or 1675 feet to 3250 feet above sea level.

A view of Cantalupo taken from the road to Roccamandolfi which is up the mountain.

...

A favorite photo up the hill from the village center to the Church of San Salvatore taken in 2008.  On the right, the same view of the church.... photo taken in 1920.

..

A different view of the church, also from the center of the village.  The small church, Addolorata, across from the bakery on Via Fontana on the main road into Cantalupo, needs some interior photos.

An aerial view of the village.

....

Monument to Soldiers. It is located in Piazza Alfonso Perrella in the center of the village. It was inaugurated in 1967, constructed by the initiative of ex-soldiers and sponsored by the city administration. It is dedicated to the memory of Cantalupo's citizens who died during the two World Wars: 1915-1918 and 1940-1945. The photo to the right was taken in 1969, a better close up and not as landscaped as the 2008 photo on the left.

We will acquire a list of who is honored on this monument.

The railroad is the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific.

A little history. Many Cantalupesi were recruited to work on the railroads spec principally and businesses in Anaconda, Montana and the surrounding area.

Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railway from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railway is a short line railroad in the U.S. state of Montana which was founded in 1892. It was financed by the interests behind the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and operated primarily to carry copper ore from the mines at Butte, Montana to the smelters at Anaconda, Montana, although the company was chartered as a common carrier and also carried passengers and general freight.

The BA&P was an electrification pioneer, converting in 1913 and being the first primarily freight railroad to electrify. Electrification was at 2,400 Volts DC; the work was performed by General Electric and the railroad's own staff. The electrification was abandoned in 1967 as it had become cheaper to operate diesel-electric locomotives.

The railroad as a whole lost much of its business following the closure of the Anaconda smelters, and in 1985 was sold to a consortium of local investors and reconstituted as the Rarus Railway. On July 19, 2007, Patriot Rail Corporation, the parent company which acquired Rarus Railway in May 2007, announced that the railway's name was officially changed back to Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railway.

In 1969 Robin and Don Crivellone's first trip to Cantalupo, the D'Ippolitto family was so gracious to us. Showing us where our relatives lived and invited us in for coffee. The lady on the right is Adelaide Carlascio born approximately 1906 - was Don's mother's school friend.   The Father is Guiseppe -Mena (don't know maiden name) his wife, we lost our notes.   The older boy Addolorato, owns the bakery, younger boy is Raffaele.   Also in 1969 - Tulia (Ruggero) Barbieri, Romolo Barbieri, Elviro Barbieri, Robin Crivellone, Tulia (Lombardi) Barbieri.

Salvatore Crivellone's house next to Palazzo Peccia, (the Palazzo is vacant at the moment).  We believe that Salvatore taught the boys tailoring in this home.

MONEY, MONEY - First person gets the money - Lorenzo and I are willing to give 1 Euro or $1.50 if someone identifies at least two of the boys in the photo.

A good snow fall in Cantalupo 12-15-07 taken by Lorenzo Orrino.

YUM, YUM fresh baked  bread (2008) in a "real oven" - loaves and memories of flat bread - pizza - with holes in the middle.  Mothers added tomatoes and spices, when things were better cheese and spicy sausage (pepperoni in some countries).

Enzo Palumbo describes this photo:

Back row (left to right): Grandmother Anna Colace with uncle Michele Marano (in her arms) Sisters Elvira, Carmela, Antonietta Marano (my mother) with her hand on the shoulder of her little sister Maria. Man sitting down on the grass is a neighbor (don't know his name). Sitting on Man is my uncle Antonio Marano, beside him is his younger brother Domenico. The women sitting down is my great-grandmother, Maria Pasqualina Marsillo. Carmela and Elvira, were born in Santa Maria del Molise. The next five were born in Cantalupo

The wedding of Vincenzo Palumbo and Antonietta Marano, September 1951. Photo, in front of Church. Left of the bride is Pietro Palumbo - Vincenzo's father. Walking home from the wedding at the church with family and friends .. a great photo showing a custom for some in the village.

..

Via Rione Calle - local bakery with red awning. Piazza Padre Pio on road into Cantalupo.

...

Street with view toward the Sanctuary (see photos below) west of Cantalupo. Via del Popolo - street leading south from the back of the Church.

...

A very random view. Piazza behind church, the current city hall is located on this piazza. Note the stone pattern that can be seen from Google Earth.

...

The contrast from 2008 to 1969.  So typical of the overall improvement of buildings in the village. Left Amalia Barbieri who lives in the front portion of the house, her cousin, Addolorato, lives in the rear portion. Flowers, white painted building, shutters, a lamp-post and stone pavers rather than gravel for a yard.. A big change from the 1969 photo. The house is located just behind the Church... again a Google Earth photo reveals a beautiful piazza - Piazza Garibaldi - with an unusual circular pattern of stone pavers.

The only Trattoria (restaurant) in Cantalupo nel Sannio, and it is good. Like most Italian restaurants they serve a drink before the meal, in this case it was a small glass of Campari that wets your appetite.  It is located a few steps north of the War Memorial.

Enjoying lunch, Addolorato, our host, Don Crivellone, Sonia Scioli - others not in photo, Tindara, Lorenzo and Robin.

..

One of two bars, this one is a few steps south of the War Memorial, the other bar is up the street towards the Church.  Right photo a street leading to the west side of Cantalupo.

...

Another interesting street. There are no shortage of steps throughout Cantalupo. View of the school, just to show there are also trees to go with the steps.

View from Campo di Fuori immediately west of the Church.

...

Via Campo di Fuori  a view north towards Taverna. Malese Mountains south of Cantalupo. This photo was taken in June. To the east of Cantalupo is the infamous village of San Massimo (remember the war between Cantalupo and San Massimo). Up the Maltese Mountains from San Massimo is a ski resort - Campitello.

Mini resort on the outskirts of Cantalupo nel Sannio - 10 Euros for the day.

...

     ..

Sanctuary of S. Addolorata, a few kilometers west of Cantalupo nel Sannio.  Easily seen from some streets in 'Cantalupo.

A really deluxe hotel adjacent to the Sanctuary.  La Fonte dell'Astore
